Council of Europe

Malta, being a party to the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data (Convention ETS no.108), is a member of the consultative committee (T-PD) set up in terms of Chapter V of the Convention, which meets regularly on an annual basis, and is entrusted inter alia to make proposals to facilitate or improve the application of the convention and to suggest amendments to the convention.

This Convention - which for the past four decades has been the only international legally binding instrument on the protection of private life and personal data - has this year been modernised, after seven years of intense work and negotiations. This modernisation pursued two main objectives: to deal with challenges resulting from the use of new information and communication technologies and to strengthen the Convention’s effective implementation.
