IDPC raises awareness through lecture on Data Protection and Journalism Ethics at MCAST

17 June 2026

As part of its ongoing commitment to promoting data protection awareness and encouraging a culture of professionalism and ethics, the Information and Data Protection Commissioner (IDPC) delivered a specialised lecture to media and journalism students at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST).

The session was delivered by Dr Marco Fagnano and Dr Sasha Muscat, both Legal Counsels at the IDPC. It formed part of the office’s broader outreach programme, through which it regularly engages with public entities, professionals and students to strengthen understanding of data protection obligations and professional responsibilities across various sectors.

Recognising the importance of equipping future professionals with practical, regulatory-focused knowledge, the lecture explored the relationship between privacy, data protection, freedom of expression and press freedom. Students were guided through the relevant provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), with particular emphasis on the legal and practical considerations arising in journalism and media reporting, as well as domestic complaints and investigation procedures.

Through case law and discussion of real-world scenarios, students gained valuable insight into the complex balancing exercise between protecting personal data and safeguarding the public interest through freedom of expression. The session highlighted the day-to-day responsibilities of media professionals when processing personal data, and the importance of ensuring the protection of fundamental rights while enabling responsible journalism.

The lecture was well received by both students and academic staff, reflecting the IDPC’s continued dedication to raising awareness and promoting responsible data processing practices across Malta.
