2025 Global Privacy Enforcement Network sweep focuses on the protection of children’s privacy

03 November 2025

From the 3 to the 7 November 2025, the IDPC will participate to the annual Global Privacy Enforcement Network (GPEN) Sweep that will see more than thirty authorities for the protection of personal data and privacy from around the world, assess websites and mobile applications that are targeted at children or that are popular with children, but not necessarily targeted at children, such as certain social networking sites.

The theme of this year’s Sweep recognises that today’s digital space is a significant part of children’s lives and aims to assess whether online services consider the best interests of children by implementing protective controls and age assurance mechanisms to limit the collection of children’s personal information, or otherwise, leave young people vulnerable to risks such as online tracking, profiling, targeting, and exposure to inappropriate or harmful content.

The IDPC will focus its activity on websites developed in, or relevant to, its jurisdiction taking into consideration different industries and categories such as shopping online, children’s attractions, education and children’s activities.

When engaging with the websites, those involved in the Sweep will simulate users’ experience by adopting the perspective of children by assessing the ease with which they could make privacy choices, obtain privacy information, and log out of or delete an account.

The sweep will mark the 10-year anniversary of a similar children’s privacy sweep conducted in 2015, allowing authorities to compare results.

The results of the sweep will be compiled and published in a report in the coming months.

About the Global Privacy Enforcement Network (GPEN)

The Global Privacy Enforcement Network connects privacy enforcement authorities to promote and support cooperation in cross-border enforcement of laws protecting privacy.

The Network has conducted international privacy sweeps on various themes since 2013. The initiative aims to increase awareness of privacy rights and responsibilities, encourage compliance with privacy legislation, identify concerns that may be addressed through targeted education or enforcement, and enhance cooperation between global data protection and privacy authorities.
