IDPC at the European Case Handling Workshop 2025 in Prishtina, Kosova

Legal and European Affairs Senior Officer Penelope Micallef Vassallo and Legal Counsel Sasha Muscat attended the European Case Handling Workshop (ECHW2025) which was held in Prishtina, Kosova, between 17 and 19 November 2025.

The ECHW2025 was hosted for the first time by the Information and Privacy Agency of Kosova. The ECHW2025 brought together around 70 representatives of data protection authorities from 23 European countries, including Albania, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Germany, Guernsey, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

During the ECHW2025, data protection experts and decision-makers addressed key issues shaping the development of personal data protection standards. Discussions focused on the use of smart cameras and biometric data in public spaces, the phenomenon of deepfakes and AI-generated content, the protection of children's data on digital platforms, challenges related to data scraping and the use of publicly accessible data, as well as cross-border cooperation and the processing of health data in the digitalisation era.

The workshop provided an opportunity for representatives of European data protection authorities to exchange experiences on investigating complaints, issuing guidance to controllers and enforcing data protection law. The representatives were able to engage in productive discussions and gain valuable insights into how their counterparts from other data protection authorities are addressing emerging data protection challenges and promoting public awareness of data protection within their territories.

The workshop certainly served to strengthen cooperation among the European data protection authorities, and reaffirmed the shared commitment to upholding high standards of data protection in an increasingly complex digital era.

The ECHW 2025 concluded with the announcement that next year’s edition of the workshop will be hosted by the Croatian Personal Data Protection Agency.
