ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) marks a new era of accountability for AI systems, placing the protection of fundamental rights at the core of AI governance. Under Article 27, deployers of certain high-risk AI systems are required to carry out a Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment (FRIA). This assessment goes beyond technical compliance, ensuring that AI design, development, and deployment actively respect and safeguard rights such as data protection, privacy, non-discrimination, freedom of expression, and human dignity.
This full-day workshop, organised by the IDPC in close collaboration with Prof. Alessandro Mantelero, will explain and familiarise participants with the FRIA requirement, while providing a practical, step-by-step methodology for carrying it out. Prof. Mantelero is an acclaimed Associate Professor of Private Law and Law & Technology at the Polytechnic University of Turin. He led this challenging project at the Catalan Data Protection Authority with the participation of various private and public entities, which created a model which combines the risk assessment methodology with the fundamental rights’ legal framework.
Participants will also have the opportunity to apply this methodology to selected AI use cases in a hands-on, collaborative setting.
By the end of the session, attendees will understand the importance of identifying and assessing risks to fundamental rights that may arise from AI systems, and how to implement effective mitigation measures. The workshop will also explore the complementarity between the GDPR and the AI Act, particularly the connection between the FRIA and the Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) required for AI systems that process personal data and are likely to result in a high risk to the rights and freedoms of individuals.
